Executive recruiters generally work on senior positions which are difficult to fill through advertising. These headhunters will usually spend time looking for the ideal candidate and it can be useful to build a good relationship with them. If you are not interested in the role they contact you about, they will keep you in mind for the future, if you maintain positive contact. These are some ways of working with executive recruiters, so they let you know about suitable opportunities as soon as they start the recruitment process.

Respond to Contact

If you are regularly contacted by recruiters, it can seem like hassle you don't need, however, it is important to always be courteous. If they make contact, always respond, even if it means taking some time out of your busy day. You may not be actively looking for a new role, but you never know what they might offer unless you take the time to speak to them. Even if the role isn't quite what you are looking for, it is important to respond. If you fail to reply, they are unlikely to contact you again and you never know when you might need some assistance.

Outline your Requirements

The roles executive recruiters work on will change on a daily basis, so it is useful to outline your requirements to them. In doing this, they are likely to keep a note and will let you know when something suitable arises.

Recommend Candidates

If an executive recruiter contacts you about a role you are not interested in, let them know if you have other contacts would be suitable. In doing this, you will be assisting the recruiter with their search and this is something they won't fail to remember.

Stand Out from Others

As executive recruiters are generally working on roles which are difficult to fill, they will have certain expectations of any candidates they put forward to clients. It is their reputation on the line, so they will want to ensure they only recommend the best. You can stand out from the others by ensuring you are enthusiastic during any calls, you explain your experience in detail and you ask relevant questions. Enthusiasm and drive are attributes which recruiters will be looking out for and if they sense you are disinterested, they are unlikely to want to progress with you.

Regular Contact

There is no harm in making regular contact with executive recruiters to find out if they have anything which might be suitable for you. If they are working on your application, make sure you ask them for feedback, as this will reaffirm your interest. The recruitment process can be a long one, so even if you haven't heard anything back, it doesn't mean you have been unsuccessful. In staying in touch, you will stay in the recruiter's mind and it will help you to build a strong relationship with them. Even if not now, it might be useful for the future.
