How to Build Relationships with Recruiters

How to Build Relationships with Recruiters

If you are looking for employment, one of the best resources you can have is the help of recruiters. Recruiters can give you access to new roles before anyone else and can actively seek work on your behalf. It is often the case they can have some influence over the employer when it comes to making a decision on who to hire, as they will usually have a good relationship and trust with them. With this in mind, it makes sense to ensure you build a strong relationship with your recruiter. Even if you are not currently looking for employment, it is worthwhile having a good relationship with recruiters, as you never know when you might need their assistance in the future. These are some of the ways you can ensure you build a good relationship.
Open Communication

If your recruiter is trying to get a hold of you, don't ignore their call, even if they are contacting you about a role you are not particularly interested in or telling you something you don't want to hear. In order to build any relationship you need to establish open and regular contact and this is no different with your recruiter. If the recruiter knows you will always get back to them when they make contact, they will be far more willing to do it.

Be Honest

Many candidates don't like the idea of telling the recruiter that they are not enjoying a job and want to leave or that they can no longer attend an interview. Instead of informing the recruiter, they will go into hiding and leave them hanging, which obviously then affects the relationship in a negative way. No matter what the situation is, it is much better to be honest. For instance, if you are not going to attend an interview, let them know. This allows them to get back to their client, instead of being left looking unprofessional by not knowing your whereabouts. If you are honest, your recruiter will look more favorably on you and will be more willing to help you in the future. Don't be afraid to tell them if you can only work certain hours, it is better to do this than commit to a role and then let them down.

Reliability

You can't expect your recruiter to be willing to help you if you are unreliable and this will cause a breakdown in your relationship. If you want to build a good relationship with your recruiter, you should prove to them that you are reliable and you will find that they will be much more willing to help you.
Return the Favor

Your recruiter is there to help you, but there are also ways you can help them. For instance, if you have gained employment and hear about another company who are recruiting, you might want to let your recruiter know, so they can approach them and potentially gain some business. Your recruiter will appreciate the fact that you have taken the time to help them out and it will enable the relationship to get stronger. Relationships are about give and take so keep this in mind if you want to ensure you keep things positive.

Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another.

Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another. Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a message and a recipient. This may sound simple, but communication is actually a very complex subject. The transmission of the message from sender to recipient can be affected by a huge range of things. These include our emotions, the cultural situation, the medium used to communicate, and even our location. The complexity is why good communication skills are considered so desirable by employers around the world: accurate, effective and unambiguous communication is actually extremely hard. A communication therefore has three parts: the sender, the message, and the recipient. The sender ‘encodes’ the message, usually in a mixture of words and non-verbal communication. It is transmitted in some way (for example, in speech or writing), and the recipient ‘decodes’ it. Of course, there may be more than one recipient, and t...
